Driver Sought After Video Captures Violent Crash That Left BMW Stuck Under Semi on 10 Fwy in I.E.

California Highway Patrol officials are searching for the driver of an Infiniti that was caught on video causing a violent crash that left a BMW pinned under a big rig on the 10 Freeway in the Colton area earlier this week.

The collision occurred about 3 p.m. Wednesday on the westbound 10 between the Riverside and Pepper avenues exits, according to a Facebook post from Alan Parcero, whose mother was driving the BMW.

Madis Tolentino, the driver of the BMW, told KTLA she was grateful to come out of the crash alive.

On the day of the crash, she had left work and was driving home to Ontario when she encountered two cars — including the Infiniti. She said they appeared to be racing.

“From my perspective, when I was seeing them both kind of trying to get to the first spot I guess, in my heart, I believe that they were racing," she said.

Dashcam video captured the terrifying moment when Tolentino's BMW was cut off and side-swiped by the Infiniti, causing it to hit another sedan and veer into a nearby big rig. Her car ended up trapped beneath the semi's trailer and was dragged for a short distance.

“Seeing it made me realize, even more so, how grateful I am to come out of something like that," she said.

The sedan that the BMW had careened into stopped next to the center divider.

Meanwhile, the Infiniti driver continued on and left the scene, according to the footage. Parcero also stated in the Facebook post that the driver fled and didn't return.

Jose Rios, another person who was driving on the freeway at the time, captured video of the crash on a dash camera that had been placed on the rear of his vehicle.

In a phone interview Friday morning, Rios told KTLA he saw the Infiniti weaving in and out of traffic and driving at a high rate of speed before the violent collision.

“This guy … has regards for nobody on the freeway," he said.

Once Rios saw what happened, he had his girlfriend dial 911 and report the crash. He also stopped and pulled over to assist the BMW driver.

“She was pretty worked up, she was screaming and crying," Rios said. “Once she got out the car, she immediately ran to the truck driver and hugged him. She was holding on to the truck driver. I ran and I asked her, ‘Is anybody else in the car? Is anybody else in the car?’ There’s smoke everywhere.”

Tolentino suffered minor injuries, including cuts and bruises, and told KTLA she's also been experiencing a fair amount of anxiety since the crash.

However, she said she was comforted by how many people stopped to help in the aftermath.

“I saw a lot of people get out of their cars, came to me, made sure I was OK, and then went to the car, made sure nobody else was in the car," Tolentino said.

Rios provided her with the video from his dash camera, which her family uploaded to Facebook.

"Thank you Jose for catching this evidence on your dash cam and pulling over to help aid my mom, I appreciate your kindness. It means a lot to our family," a grateful Parcero wrote in the post.

CHP confirmed Friday that they found the Infiniti sometime after the crash; they have not yet located the driver, although they believe they know who was behind the wheel at the time.

No additional details were immediately provided by the agency.

The incident was reported about 4:45 p.m. near the Mount Vernon Avenue exit, according to the California Highway Patrol.

An initial investigation indicates that one vehicle shot at another vehicle on the highway, causing the vehicle that was shot at to side swipe the vehicle where the shots allegedly came from, Colton Police Sgt. Ray Mendez said.

Both people got out of their respective vehicles and began to argue, when one of them allegedly stabbed the other, Mendez said.

Both were taken to a hospital with serious injuries to their upper bodies, Mendez said, elaborating that one had a stab wound and the other had a gunshot wound.

The vehicle that was side swiped remained at the scene until it was towed from the area.

The eastbound side of the highway was shut down before the vehicle that was side swiped was towed, and was eventually reopened, Mendez said.

Aerial video from Sky5 showed that traffic was backed up near the incident.

Thousands of Southern Californians already dealing with the most intense heat wave of the year were also without power Thursday, including the majority of the city of Colton, where classes have been canceled at multiple schools.

Lightning hit Colton's main substation, damaging all the main feeds, Colton Public Utilities posted on Facebook.

Power in the area was expected to be out for at least eight to 10 hours, according to the post, which stated the utility was without phone service and would be updating the public exclusively through social media. About 50,000 Colton residents – the vast majority of the city – were without power, city fire Capt. David Santos said.

Most of the city regained power by midafternoon, but then a blown transformer was reported about 4 p.m.

The city utility urged residents to conserve energy.

With temperatures expected to soar into the triple digits Thursday, several schools in Colton canceled classes for the day.

"It was like you were trapped in an oven," one little girl told KTLA of the conditions outdoors.

More than 6,300 customers  were without power in the San Bernardino area Thursday, according to the Southern California Edison website. Upland, Rancho Cucamonga and Rialto were among the cities reporting outages. Another 4,400-plus customers were affected in Riverside and about 3,071 customers were without power at one point in the Los Angeles area, according to Edison.

The outages come as Southern California remains under a scorching heat wave.

Prolonged dry conditions are expected to continue through the weekend, bringing with them an elevated risk of more outages and fire danger, according to the National Weather Service.

Colton resident Megan Clement said she took this photo of ice that fell from the sky onto her home on March 21, 2016.

Colton resident Megan Clement was in her townhouse doing some cleaning when she heard the loud bangs. She thought a tree might have fallen on the home.

Then she went outside and found them: eight to 10 large chunks of ice.

They were everywhere — on the roof, covering the walkway and in the bushes.

The unusual incident occurred in the 1200 block of Mojave Drive about 10 a.m. Monday — when the sky was clear with no threat of hail or other strange weather.

Clement said she Googled the phenomenon and has some ideas what happened. Large chunks of ice known as megacryometeors can form under certain conditions, but it’s not clear if that’s what occurred.

Meanwhile, Clement is saving those strange ice chunks in her freezer.

Bill Lawler Jr. was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of three counts: penetration by foreign object, oral copulation with a person under 16, and unlawful sexual intercourse, according to a statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

An investigation began Feb. 22 when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported to the sheriff’s Internet Crimes Against Children Detail that a Colton man had solicited child pornography from a female minor, the news release said.

Sheriff’s detectives subsequently identified the teenage girl and named Lawler as the suspect. The alleged victim and the man knew each other as residents of the same neighborhood, the statement said.

Investigators from the Sheriff’s Department contacted the 15-year-old, “who disclosed sexual abuse and the solicitation of child pornography by Lawler,” according to the news release. The alleged abuse occurred between Thanksgiving Day in 2015 and March 2016.

Lawler was arrested on a warrant for sex offenses against a child and was being held on $500,000 bail. He was scheduled to be arraigned in Superior Court on Friday.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call Detective John Everman or Detective Jennifer Burkhart of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department at 909-387-3615.

The incident began when the driver of a Honda refused to yield to a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputy during an attempted traffic stop near La Cadena Drive and Mount Vernon Avenue in Colton early Monday morning.

The deputy began to pursue the driver, but ended the chase after the person in the Honda began driving erratically, said Lt. Rich Lawhead of the San Bernardino Police Department.

A short time later, after reaching speeds near 100 mph, the Honda ran through a red light and into a tan Mustang near the intersection of Mount Vernon Avenue and Rialto Avenue, Lawhead said.

The driver of the Honda, identified by coroner’s officials as 30-year-old Rudy Javier Vargas, from San Bernardino, was killed in the crash along with one of the two people inside the Mustang.

The man killed in the Mustang was identified by his fiancé as Alex Peyro.

"He was full of life. He loved his community,” Sarah Sillas said of her fiancé.

Officials said Peyro, a father of two, and a coworker were headed to their job Monday morning when the collision occurred.

"He was a good guy. Very talented ... good father ... a good person all the way around," friend Andrew Armendariz said.

The coworker was also injured in the crash, but was expected to survive.

A memorial of flowers was seen at the crash site in honor of Peyro Tuesday morning.

Hundreds of people turned out Wednesday night to show their support for the family of a 12-year-old boy who died after playing soccer Tuesday at an elementary school in Colton.

Joel Gallegos said his son Dominick was taking part in a physical education class on a field at Ulysses S. Grant Elementary School just before the end of the school day when he somehow ended up on the ground.

School officials told him that Dominick had fallen and lost consciousness after running into another student, Gallegos told KTLA on Wednesday.

Dominick was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Katie Orloff, a spokeswoman for the Colton Joint Unified School District confirmed that a student had died and said a crisis team was at the school Wednesday. She did not provide any details of what had occurred.

"Everybody here is trying to do their best to support each other and work through it as the community that we are." Orloff said.

Detectives were sent to the hospital and ruled out any type of assault or physical injury that may have happened at the school, according to Colton Police Department Officer Todd Smith, the school's resource officer.

Smith said investigators were waiting for a report from the county coroner's office.

However, Dominick’s father talked to his son's friends who witnessed the incident and believes his son was kicked by another student.

The students told Gallegos that Dominick slipped when he went to pick up a soccer ball and another student, who Gallegos said has a reputation for being a school bully, stomped on his son’s chest twice and Dominick lost consciousness.

"I guess the kid thought he was playing around. He started shaking him to wake up," Gallegos said.

But that's when the bell ending to school day rang and the boy just took off, Gallegos said.

"I don't know where the teachers were," said Gallegos, who felt his son should have been better supervised during the class. "Someone should have been watching those kids."

Gallegos and the boy's mother both said their son had no health problems and recently had a physical.

"This kid did it on purpose," said Gallegos.

The father said he asked his son’s friends if Dominick had a problem with the other boy prior to the incident, but the friends said, "No, that's just the way that kid is.”

Gallegos said he wanted to help police with their investigation but they had yet to speak with him.

"He was my only son," Gallegos said, starting to cry.

Dominick was described as fun and friendly during a vigil held Wednesday night in the Colton neighborhood where the Gallegos family live.

Hundreds of people gathered and prayed with the Gallegos family.

"This just really hits home. This is a small community and we all love each other," said Jody Kagarise, who lives in the neighborhood.

On Tuesday night, about 100 parents and students had gathered at the school, but no one who spoke to a KTLA reporter was able to say exactly what had happened, only that a student had died early that day.

The district superintendent was present Tuesday evening and said he had no comment and wanted to respect the family's privacy. He said the district would send out a press release.

A coroner’s autopsy found no evidence of trauma on the body of a 12-year-old boy who died after his parents said he was stomped on by another student at a Colton elementary school.

The San Bernardino County coroner’s office’s finding in the case of Dominick Gallegos was posted online Thursday, when the autopsy was completed.

“Preliminary autopsy findings indicate an enlarged (hypertrophic) heart and evidence of early congestive cardiac failure,” the coroner’s brief statement read.

Gallegos died Tuesday after being taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center from Ulysses S. Grant Elementary School in Colton.

Flavio Delgadillo was eventually arrested and booked on suspicion of homicide, officials said.

The circumstances behind the death and the motive remain unknown.

It was not immediately clear when or where the chase began, but a Colton Police Department official confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen, and that at one point the agency was handling the pursuit.

The California Highway Patrol later took it over, however, according to the police official.

By 10:50 p.m., the white sedan — which appeared to be a Ford Taurus — had reached Los Angeles County, as the driver sped down the westbound 10 Freeway in the Pomona area, Sky5 aerial video showed

The chase also headed down the 605 and 105 freeways before the driver got off at the Lakewood Boulevard off-ramp in the Downey around 11 p.m.

The driver continued speeding down surface streets, at one point having to slow down abruptly as the car nearly hit another vehicle not far from a 91 Freeway ramp, the aerial video showed.

The car could also be seen running multiple red lights as the driver continued to evade pursuing law enforcement all the way into the Long Beach area.

By 11:15 p.m., the chase had entered a residential area of the city; a few minutes after that, the car slowed down for an unknown reason.

The driver, who appeared to be smoking a cigarette behind the wheel, eventually stopped the vehicle, got out of the car and surrendered to law enforcement around 11:20 p.m., the aerial video showed.

No additional information was immediately provided.
